On November 19, 2021, the Conference commemorating the 90th birthday of Prof. Shen Shanhong and the change of the board of directors of Shen Shanhong Fund was held on Zijingang Campus. Ren Shaobo, Secretary of the CPC Committee and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Education Foundation of Zhejiang University, Xue Yanzhuang, former Vice Chairman of Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the CPPCC, Vice Chairman of Development Committee of Zhejiang University and former Secretary of the CPC Committee of Hangzhou University were present and delivered speeches.
Luo Weidong, President of Zhejiang University City College, Huang Xianhai, Vice President of Zhejiang University, Fei Junqing, former Secretary of the CPC Committee of Hangzhou Dianzi University, Pang Xuequan, Vice Chairman of Development Committee of Zhejiang University, Academician Zhu Lizhong from College of Environmental and Resource Sciences of Zhejiang University, and more than 20 alumni were also present at the Conference, hosted by Prof. Lou Hansong, Secretary General of Shen Shanhong Fund.
In his speech, Ren Shaobo said that Professor Shen Shanhong, by his practice of the University motto, reform and innovation, dedication, integrity and rigorous academics in his life, has shaped generations of students and teachers of Zhejiang University. We should learn his loyalty to the CPC, his aspiration of following original heart, selflessness, openness and magnanimity, as well as his dedication to teaching and learning, pioneering and innovative philosophy of schooling, and turn the valuable cultural-ethical wealth left by Prof. Shen into our strength in driving University progress, national rejuvenation and human progress.
Vice Chairman Xue Yanzhuang said that Professor Shen’s innovation in disciplines, pooling of famous teachers and masters, cultivation of cadres are still vivid in our memories, and his indefatigable spirit of working day and night for educational reforms is admirable. We should inherit and carry forward his qualities and make due contributions to the University.
A video commemorating Prof. Shen Shanhong was shown at the Conference and the guests present spoke in turn, relating his deeds and their deepest memories to him. Vice President Huang Xianhai said that Professor Shen, with his philosophy of “being based on academics, loving and cherishing talents”, cultivated a cohort of young leaders and teachers, thus laying a solid foundation for the University. Prof. Fei Junqing remembered Prof. Shen’s devotion to the University in its management and how to make the University famous at home and abroad. Academician Zhu Lizhong said that Professor Shen made great efforts in disciplines and faculty building, which was conducive to the University. Senior Professor Shi Jinchuan said that Professor Shen made an important contribution to the professional teams of the University with his rigorous governance and highlight of academic atmosphere.
Luo Weidong, Director General of the first session of Shen Shanhong Fund, delivered a work report on behalf of the Board, saying that since its establishment, the Fund has adhered to its purpose, pooled the strength of students, faculty and alumni, and made every effort possible to manage and expand the Fund well, so the total value of the Fund reached a historical high. The Fund has supported the University in its selection of important projects, the progress of humanities and social sciences, the publication of major research results, the popularity of academic impact, the introduction of renowned scholars and the attainment of good academic atmosphere, and thus making positive contributions to disciplines and talent training.
After reporting the financial statement, the preparations to the change of Board of Directors of the Fund, Zhang Meifeng, Secretary General of the Fund said that Prof. Shen exerted a great impact upon a great number of students and teachers with his noble qualities of humanities, love of talents and education, frankness and selflessness, so the growth of the Fund and the preparations of the new term of the Fund have been supported by many alumni, which proves the charisma of Professor Shen and the cohesiveness of the alumni.
A new board of directors were elected at the Conference. Pang Xuequan was elected Director General of the second session, Wang Haiguang, Shi Jinchuan, Lv Jianming, Wu Wanglou, Shen Liyong, Zhang Meifeng, Chen Yuemeng, Fei Zhengxiang, Huang Huaxin, Lou Hansong, elected deputy directors general, 28 teachers and alumni elected executive directors. Academician Wang Jian, Senior Professor Wang Chongming, Academician Zhu Lizhong, Professor Luo Weidong, Professor Fei Junqing, Professor Huang Xianhai, Academician Ma Shengming were employed as advisors. The statutes of the Fund were revised to support the students and talents in arts and sciences of Zhejiang University. Besides, the plan of the Fund for 2022 was reviewed and a lot of opinions and suggestions were offered by the board.
Some of the newly elected deputy directors and executive directors made speeches in turn. Lv Jianming, Shao Jianxiong, Wang Haiguang, Huang Huaxin and Xu Xuan put forward a series of constructive opinions, e.g. expanding the scale, increasing the benefits, conducting more Fund-related activities, to expand the scale and impact of the Fund.
After introducing the overall picture of Zhejiang University Education Foundation, Secretary General Shen Liyong said that Shen Shanhong Fund, growing in a standardized way and achieving remarkable results, is a major project of the Foundation, therefore, the Foundation will do everything possible to keep the Fund running and growing as a hallmark project.
Finally, Pang Xuequan, new director general of the Foundation, expressed his gratitude to all those present for their support and promised he would live up to the expectations, explore new modes of development apart from regular goals, strive to attain new breakthroughs in major landmark projects, and expand the new pattern of the Fund in Zhejiang University and the world.
