The Wing-man Pavilion at Zhejiang University’s ZijingangCampus is a campus lecture hall adjacent to the Qizhen Lake, and it is also oneof the best viewing spots for enjoying lotus blossoms in summer. The renovationand naming of this waterfront lecture hall, which is both literary andacademic, is closely related to an outstanding woman. She is a Hong KongJustice of the Peace who has been caring about and supporting the developmentof Zhejiang University for a long time. She is also winner of the Hong KongBronze Bauhinia Star, and the Medal of Honor recipient. She is Ms Dan YangWing-man, Chairman of Hong Kong Wah Fu Petroleum Co., Ltd. and Chairman ofAlfax Orient Ltd.
As an old friend and good friend of ZhejiangUniversity, Dan Yang Wing-man has been supporting the development of ZhejiangUniversity. She donated RMB 5 million to the infrastructure construction andtalent training of Zhejiang University in 2012.
This time, after learning that COVID-19 is wreakinghavoc, she contacted the Zhejiang University Education Foundation (ZUEF) withoutdelay. Upon learning that medical teams have been dispatched to Hubei Province fromthe First Affiliated Hospital, Second Affiliated Hospital, Sir Run Run ShawHospital and Fourth Affiliated Hospital to Zhejiang University School ofMedicine to fight against the outbreak at the frontlines, she was proud of the medicalworkers who were fearless in fighting at the frontlines and taking responsibility, but also worried about the shortage of protective materials for the medicalteams. On February 8, after further confirming relevant information with the ZUEF,she immediately contacted her friends from across the globe and inquired aboutthe urgently needed medical supplies. She was so efficient that the Secretariatof the ZUEF received the first batch of donated supplies only one day after thecontact—5000 pairs of medical gloves!
Later, Dan Yang Wing-man followed up the procurementof medical supplies in person. In addition to communicating via WeChat everyday, she also had to make several calls daily to make detailed comparisons andresearches on the contract, brand and size of the supplies. A lot of good newswas received from the WeChat group day and night: “The protective clothing produceddomestically may be small in size, so it will be troublesome if it cannot beworn, so I purchased 4000 pieces in the XL size and 1000 pieces in the XXLsize.” “This kind of disposable isolation gowns is better than the previousones, we need to check which best meets the needs of the hospital...” She keptcommunicating and confirming over and over again, in order to find the mostsuitable supplies for the frontline medical teams.
“What I want now should all be in stock. They havebeen snapped up from all over the world. I will do whatever I can no matter thecost. I will post everything I have!” Under her promotion, 1,300 sets ofprotective clothing, 50,000 medical masks, and 500 sets of 3M Goggles, 5,000sets of disposable medical isolation gowns, and 5,000 pairs of medical gloves havebeen continuously gathering at the fastest speed at Zhejiang University, aplace she has been constantly thinking of.
“Although I am in Hong Kong, Zhejiang is myhometown, and I have always been nostalgic about the people there.” With herancestral home in Zhejiang, Dan Yang has been thinking about supportingstudents and her hometown as a patriotic entrepreneur. As one of the highereducation institutions in her hometown, Zhejiang University has long been a keyunit of her concern and support. Of the 5 million yuan she donated to ZhejiangUniversity in 2012, 500,000 yuan was used to support the “Zhejiang UniversityJunsheng Fund” to help those financially disadvantaged students of theUniversity, 2 million yuan to setting up the “Zhejiang University Yang Wing-manScholarship”, which was given to outstanding students from the Faculty ofAgriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences, students in art majors, andnon-professional art students (those who took up sketching during the collegeentrance examination). Up to now, nearly 200 outstanding students have beenawarded with the scholarship; 2.5 million yuan was used to set up the “ZhejiangUniversity Zijingang Waterfront Lecture Hall Repair Fund” for the repair works ofthe Lecture Hall.
In appreciation of Ms. Dan Yang Wing-man for hersupport to Zhejiang University, the University named the Zijingang WaterfrontLecture Hall as “Wing-man Pavilion”. When a group of guests and she arrived atWing-man Pavilion in their visit of Zhejiang University’s Zijingang Campus atthe end of 2012, she was greeted by two recipients of the “Yang Wing-manScholarship” who presented her with flowers and expressed deep gratitude to heron behalf of the 24 award recipients.
Batches of relief supplies gathered by Dan YangWing-man have been continuously delivered to the ZUEF. The alumni building onZijingang campus had been a busy scene every day, with the staff countingsupplies and sorting out packages in a tense but orderly fashion.
Everyone was moved, inspired and encouraged by DanYang Wing-man’s philanthropy. Everyone was full of enthusiasm and had greatfighting spirits. They did not dare to slack in the slightest because they had toorganize these precious medical supplies which had been gathered in Hong Kongfrom across the globe, airlift from Hong Kong to Hangzhou, and then dispatch theseto the frontlines as soon as possible. Someone said, “As foundation staffengaged in charitable undertakings, we are deeply aware of the efforts it takesto gather these supplies! We must understand, in this special period, logisticsare even more expensive than physical goods!”
“This batch is first-line protective clothing, and hereare face masks, goggles and gloves. Equipped from head to toe, Ms. Wing-manreally loves frontline teams!” While admiring the donor’s thoughtfulconsiderations, everyone quickly packed the supplies and labelled them with amarker. After learning that the donated supplies have reached the affiliatedhospitals and will be given to the Zhejiang medical teams that are assistingHubei Province, she happily said in the WeChat group: “I hope to cheer for thefrontline medical staff!”.
The supplies filled with nostalgia have beendelivered to the angels in doctors’ overalls fighting at the frontlines withoutdelay. This is the relay of love between Ms. Wing-man and Zhejiang University. Weare convinced that love will push us forward and we will surely win thisbattle!
