Never Forgetting Where our Happiness is From,Being Grateful for Motherland in the Westward Migration of ZJU

TheThird Meeting of the First Management Committee of Westward Migration GratitudeFund, Zhejiang University Education Foundation, with its 2018 Annual Meetingwas held at No. 1 Middle School of Yizhou District, Guangxi from Nov. 11thto 13th to celebrate the 80th anniversary of ZhejiangUniversity’s migrating westward to Yizhou.

TheMeeting was chaired by Zhang Zhihua, Deputy Director of the ManagementCommittee. Present at the meeting were also Professor Zheng Qiang, DeputySecretary of the CPC Committee of Zhejiang University and Director of theManagement Committee, Mrs. Dang Ying, Deputy Secretary-General of ZhejiangUniversity Education Foundation, Mr. Zhang Meifeng, Vice President of ZhejiangUniversity Alumni Association and Vice President of Innovation andEntrepreneurship Research Institute, Mr. Lu Jiansheng, Honorary President ofShenzhen Alumni Association of Zhejiang University as well as the members of theManagement Committee and leaders from Taihe, Meitan and Yizhou.

WestwardMigration Gratitude Fund of Zhejiang University Education Foundation, initiatedby alumni Lu Jiansheng and Zhang Zhihua in 2017 and sponsored by other alumni,aimed at supporting the educational undertakings in the areas along thewestward migration of Zhejiang University. Meitan Gratitude Fund, TaiheGratitude Fund and Yizhou Gratitude Fund had already been established tosupport local education. When conditions permit, the Fund will support otherareas along the westward migration, e.g. in commemorating and publicizing thewestward migration culture.

Atfirst, the Office of the Fund Management Committee reported the progression ofthe Fund, approved the list of new members and the 2019 Work Plan. DirectorZheng Qiang then granted donation certificates to alumni and appointmentletters to members of the Management Committee.

Subsequently,some leaders of Yizhou, Meitan and Taihe and representatives of the ManagementCommittees delivered lectures. They said, thanks to the support from the Fundand workers at different levels, the senior high schools in Yizhou and Taizhouhave attracted excellent students and the students have made rapid progress intheir study and some were admitted to Zhejiang University every year. Dancerooms and Maker Classrooms in Zhejiang University Primary School of Meitanhelped students and teachers develop physically and mentally while increasingtheir knowledge and broadening their horizons. The incentive policies alsostimulated the students and teachers for making this primary school a betterplace in China’s west.

Finally,the Director of Management Committee made a summary and concluded the meeting.In the next part, the awarding ceremony of “Yizhou Qiushi Scholarship” chairedby Liang Ning, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Committee and Head of YizhouDistrict, was held at No. 1 Middle School of Yizhou District. Some of theleaders from Zhejiang University and Yizhou District were present at the ceremonyand presented awards to 44 students.

Since2017, Yizhou District has been granted 100,000 yuan annually by the Fund for“Yizhou Qiushi Scholarship”. Beginning from 2018, the District Committee andthe District Government gave equal matching fund to the scholarship. Meanwhile,the Fund also contributed 250,000 yuan for the construction of thematic wallpaintings in the Westward Migration Plaza of Zhejiang University and for thecollection of archives .

Prof.Zheng Qiang delivered a lecture “Education Development and the Rise and Fall ofNational Fate” at Hechi University on the evening of 12, attracting more than4,000 attendees, including the members of the Committee, leaders from Taihe,Meitan and Yizhou, students and teachers of some middle schools.

Withhis unique perspectives, sharp viewpoints and witty language, Professor ZhengQiang narrated Chinese national education from three aspects--fair education,science education and belief education. He pointed out that nationaldevelopment and prosperity lies in the leadership of the CPC, institutionalguarantee, economic development, sci-tech progress and talent support; however,education is the key. The witty and passionate report won warm applause fromthe audience and enlightened the students and teachers present.
